Softly, Softly
Apr. 1st, 2011 11:45 amWhat do you think of when you think of cops? Fast cars, perhaps. Dramatic chases through back alleyways. Gun battles, maybe.
But I'm British, and while we have all these things and more, we also have the image of the friendly village Bobby (or Bobbie) on a bicycle. Someone who's there to look after the innocent, as much as to catch the guilty.
And this is where my story, Blazing June, in the Cleis Press Lesbian Cops anthology comes from. Here's the blurb: Single mum Carla calls the police to help out her elderly neighbour - and ends up making a connection she hadn't expected with the WPC who comes to her aid.
It's actually based on a real life situation: I used to live next door to an elderly lady who had a lot in common with Mrs Mac. I did what I could to help her, but it never really felt like enough. As in the story, matters came to a head when we had to call the police out to break into her flat.
No romances started that day—not in real life. But I've never forgotten the young police officers who came to help us out, regardless of personal injury.
And the title? Well, I defy anyone to look at Leighton's Flaming June and not be inspired! ;)
Now out in paperback!
